Retired in December 2012 from the USDA Forest Service as a Prescribed Fire/Fuels Planner; R-6 Certified Silviculturist; Forest Protection Officer, and Wildland Fire Investigator. Responsible for project development and environmental analysis, layout, and accomplishment for numerous fuel reduction and vegetation management projects implemented via USFS crews, service and stewardship contracts, and timber sales, etc. 42+ years’ experience with the US Forest Service in a variety of natural resource management programs including silviculture, fire/fuels, timber, hydrology/watershed, fisheries, wildlife, range, recreation, minerals, special uses, botany, etc. Significant experience with service, stewardship and timber sale contracts, etc. Have annually developed and managed budgets up to $7 million dollars.

A mother, a writer, an educator and a homesteader. Kirsten and her husband moved their young family to the mountains of Southern Oregon, where they have lived for the last 15 years. She became passionate about food from the ground up. The obsession became planting fruit trees, raising dairy animals, growing vegetables and preserving the harvests—all while homeschooling. She has published articles in magazines, is a contributing writer to a radio series, maintains a blog (, and she is a co-author (with her husband) of a forthcoming book on fermented vegetables from Storey Publishing. She is on the board of the Friends of the Applegate Library, the Advisory Committee for Small Farms with OSU Jackson County Extension and spends time at community meetings participating in the Adaptive Management Area work that is done with the BLM. Before all this she received a BA in Education from the University of Arizona.

Retired after 30 years teaching - mainly Ecology, Conservation Biology, and Science Process - at Southeast Missouri State university in Cape Girardeau. Research conducted in education and conservation, restoration, management and ecology in Bottomland Hardwood Forests of SE Missouri and Tropical Mist Forest in Northwestern Costa Rica. Author/co-author of over 100 publications in ecology, conservation, restoration, education, environmental issues. Relocated to Applegate Valley Summer 2012. Teaches ‘Climate Change and the Rogue Valley as a ten week SOU / Osher Lifelong Learning Institute course. Co-facilitator, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now.

Landowner on the Applegate River for 25 years. Cathy holds a Masters in Hazard Management & Community Service, an MBA, Teaching Credential and is currently completing her Ph.D. in Environmental Policy.  A frequent lecturer at Colleges & Universities, including Semester at Sea, on climate change, sustainability,  women's issues and entrepreneurism. She was recognized as  California "Women of the Year" for her work in Disaster Preparedness. Co- Founder of 'Rooted in Hope' a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable development. Cathy also serves on the Cantrell Buckley Park Enhancement Committee and the Applegater newsmagazine Board of Directors.
